Step 1

Prepare your photo that needs a mat and get a piece of scrap paper. This paper will act as the base for the mat. I also have my 12x12 card stock ready.

Step 2

Next, we'll roughly cut the paper for the desired size of the mat. I did this with the help of my ruler, I just aligned it and pulled the paper up to tear it on all sides.
Now I have this nice white space or border where my photo would sit later on.

Step 3

To continue, gather all your old stickers from your stash. You can use full stickers, but it's also a great idea to use the negative ones like the leftover of my letter stickers set below.

Step 4

Start sticking some stickers on the edge of our base paper. The effect will be better if you mix and match various stickers from different sets.

Step 5

Just continue adding the stickers until all corners of the base paper are filed. Also, don't worry about overlapping the stickers and going over the edge.

Step 6

You'll end up with something like this. Get a pair of scissors and trim down the ones going over the edge of your paper.

Step 7

We can then have a look at how it would look once the photo is on top of it. If you find that it seems too busy and your photo might be a bit lost, you can add a solid color to sit between the mat and the photo.

And there you go! Just play around with the placement of the three elements and you can adhere them altogether into your scrapbook page! Add some sentiments and other embellishments and you have a lovely layout!

I really love how the mat made my photo stand out by complementing its grungy look. Try to match the stickers you use with the style and look of your photo to bring it all together.
