How To Scrapbook: Start A Scrapbook In 4 Easy Steps:

If you want to know how to scrapbook then follow these 4 easy steps and you’ll be well on your way to capturing and preserving your most precious memories for many years to come.

Step 1 Get organised:

Scrapbooking Photos

Organise Your Photos First!

Before you even think about buying some card stock or some scrapbooking kits – the first thing you need to do is make sure all your photos are organised.

Generally scrapbookers use photos in layouts, and if you have a box or flash drive of old photos then the first thing you need to do is organize these photos into themes.

What I like to do is divide all the photos into relevant themes. For example I put all my family photos into one plastic or manila folder and label that folder “Family”. If you are working with photos on your computer, just create a new folder and call it “scrapbooking photos” and then create a sub folder called “family photos”.

Then as you continue going through your photos be sure to create new themes to organize them. That way when inspiration strikes, you just know exactly where to find the photos you need!

Step 2. Pick A Theme For Your Page:

So what exactly do you want to create a page about? Is it your last family holiday or vacation? Perhaps it was your kids first day at school. Whatever the occasion be sure to be clear on exactly what it is you want to put on the page, and what emotions you want to convey.

Decide whether your layout will feature just photos and titling, or perhaps additional journaling etc.

Then have a think about the embellishments you can use. In scrapbooking, the term ‘embellishments’ refers to the different ways we can bring a page to life by adding objects, trinkets or colors to the page. A good example of a well known embellishment is a button or ribbon.

Once you have an idea of your theme and what you’d like to embellish, the next thing you should do is sketch out your layout. What I recommend is to just take a piece of plain A4 paper and draw out what goes where.

So in other words, where will your photos go? What about the title? Where will your journaling go? And your embellishments?

The clearer picture you have of your layout, the easier it will be when it comes to gluing things down (and less chance of a mistake!!)

Step 3. Get Your Equipment / Supplies:

Scrapbok Equipment

Take The Time To Get The RIght Equipment & Supplies

Like all pastimes, you need to spend a bit of money making sure you have the right equipment to scrapbook. Although you could essentially scrapbook with just a pair of scissors and some nice card, it’s worthwhile investing in some decent equipment that will save you time and effort in the long run.

Here’s some of the equipment and supplies I suggest you get so you can get started right away:

  • scissors
  • easy stick adhesives or glue sticks
  • an album with sheet protectors
  • paper trimmer
  • markers
  • colored cardstock
  • themed or pattern scrapbook pages
  • ruler
  • oval template
  • embellishments such as stickers and buttons

You can get most of these things at all good craft supply stores. And if there’s not one near you – there’s a bunch of stores online that can deliver them straight to your door!

Step 4. Decide on the materials you’ll use, and get to work:

Ok now you’ve got a sketch of your layout and all your equipment it’s time to get to work on your layout.

Buttons are an excellent embellishment

First thing is first, you need to pick your paper. My only bit of advice here is if you’re a beginner then consider going with neutral colors. Choosing neutral colors as a background means it’s easier to blend in photos and embellishments.

However if you plan on getting super creative early on then you can go for some beautiful patterned papers that you can pick up from your local craft store.

When I purchase new paper (card stock) I always make sure I take in my photos to the craft store and put them up against the paper to make sure they co-ordinate. That way I know everything will work when I start work on the layout at home!

Another good way to start is to look at buying scrapbooking kits. These are available at your local craft store and are great because you get a bunch of stuff in a kit to create a beautiful layout. And everything within the kit co-ordinates and looks good!
